How to set a static IP for GW2 in Commissioner
Overview
This article explains the process for configuring a gateway 2 to a static IP address. A static IP address is not necessary for the majority of installations and GW2s are configured to accept IP addresses via DHCP by default.
GW2s are only compatible with LightRules systems. This guide only applies to gateway 2's (GW2s) which have serial numbers beginning in 0201 and model # 31202. GW2s are only compatible with LightRules systems.
Workflow
Materials Needed
- Commissioner 3.4.1 or newer
- Ethernet connection to POE switch
- If gateway is configured for DHCP, gateway must be connected to a DHCP server or have an active DHCP lease

- Click Ok
For Mac:

- Ensure GW2 is powered and has an IP address via DHCP or static IP. If the gateway is connected to LightRules, you can view the IP address of the gateway by clicking the Config tab and selecting Networks
- Connect the ethernet port of your computer to the same switch or network as the GW2. This is typically accomplished by connecting your laptop to a PoE switch on the lighting network or disconnecting the lighting network cable from the LRA and connecting it to your laptop
- Check that the ethernet port on the laptop running Commissioner is set an IP address in the same subnet as the gateway you wish to program
- Open the map file in Commissioner
- Click the Map menu and select Set Gateway 2 IP Addresses...
- Click Discover Lighting Gateways
- The table will populate with all GW2s Commissioner is able to discover. Select the the GW2 you wish to program and then click Set Address. If the GW2 does not appear, please verify the ethernet port of the laptop is set to an IP address in the same subnet as the GW2
- In the Set Gateway Address window, select Use Static and then enter the desired static IP address and Netmask. A Router is optional and usually left blank
- After the network information is entered, click Program Gateway. You will see a confirmation briefly in the bottom-right of the Set Gateway Address window
- You should now see the new IP address reflected in the Fixtures table of Commissioner
- Save the map file in Commissioner by clicking the File menu and selecting Save
- The map file will need to be uploaded to LightRules in order for LightRules to communicate with the gateway on the new IP address. The map file can be uploaded by clicking the Config tab and selecting Manage Map File
