LightRules System Troubleshooting Guide
Overview
Troubleshooting steps to diagnose fixtures connected to LightRules not behaving as expected. The most common causes are network communications issues, individual fixtures malfunctioning, groups of fixtures not receiving power or incorrectly configured LightRules settings.
Instructions
When a connection cannot be established to one or more fixtures at a facility, the first step is to determine the point in the Intelligent Lighting System where there is an issue. The diagram below shows an example how LightRules systems are set up at a site.

- If one or more lights are not communicating while other fixtures on that gateway are communicating, the problem probably lies within the map file or within the fixture itself.
- Power cycle the fixture and ping the fixture in LightRules.
- Confirm that the SN on the map correlates with the SN of the actual fixture. If there is a discrepancy, update the map file or program the proper fixture in Commissioner, then verify and sync the map file.
- If you suspect an individual fixture is malfunctioning, please follow the Troubleshooting LED lighting fixtures guide.
- If all the fixtures on a Gateway are not communicating while fixtures on other gateways are communicating, then the connection is probably failing at the Gateway, the ethernet cabling between the gateway and PoE switch, or at the PoE switch itself.
- Power cycle the Gateway
- Power cycle the PoE switch
- Check the CAT-5 ethernet cabling between the Gateway and PoE switch
- Please refer to Troubleshooting LightRules Gateways document for additional gateway troubleshooting information.
- If none of the fixtures are communicating at all, the issue probably lies with the first PoE switch or its connection to the LightRules Appliance.
- Power cycle the first PoE
- Check the CAT-5 connection between the LightRules Appliance and the PoE
- If the PoE switches are the Cisco model SF302-08P model sold by Digital Lumens, then please refer to the Troubleshooting Cisco switches document for additional switch troubleshooting information.
- If you are unable to access the LightRules web app, then the issue probably lies with the LightRules Appliance or its connection to the Facility Network.
- Confirm that the LRA is powered
- Check the connection between the LRA and the facility network
- If there is uncertainty regarding the facility network configuration, a monitor, keyboard and mouse can be connected to the LRA. LightRules can be accessed via the monitor.
